Caring for your flowers in the Winter

Flowers aren’t meant to last forever, but they also aren’t meant to die immediately. Read the tips below to help set yourself up for success!

So you just received a bundle of fresh cut flowers and greens. Now what?

First- if you need to get them home yet, make sure you cover them with a plastic bag if the temperatures are below 38 degrees. Most flowers are delicate and will freeze! Once you get them in the vehicle, make sure you aren’t placing them in front of a heat vent.

Second- Now that you are home, you’ll want to get them in fresh (room temp) water right away. They will need a fresh cut before doing so. Cut them with a very sharp knife or a very sharp scissors or pruners. While your flowers were out of water, the ends of the stems were “healing” over, and giving them a cut will open up the stems to properly absorb water. It is important not to crush the stems by using a dull scissors because this also effects their ability to absorb water!

Third- Location, location, location. Make sure they are not setting near a door, getting blasted with freezing air every time it opens. On the other hand, they will also die much faster if they are placed near a heat vent or in direct sunlight and are toasty warm all day.

Fourth- Every 3-4 days make sure you are refreshing the water. Do this by holding by the flowers and emptying the old water out. Then, fill the vase with fresh water, being careful not to run water on top of any of the flowers. I have a video of this on my instagram page saved under the Flower Tips highlight. As time goes on, the flower stems that are under water start to decay and quicken the dying process of the bouquet. Fresh water helps slow this down a lot!

Fifth- Cut flowers are all unique. Flowers are not man-made and therefore we can’t control when they are going droop and die. I do my best to have a good relationship with my wholesalers, process the flowers properly, and handle them carefully. I only send out flowers that are at their best with hopes they will keep performing well for you to enjoy for days to come. Fresh cut flowers are not meant to last for weeks and weeks, they are beautiful works of art that God created for us to enjoy for a short time:)
